7 Crafts for Kids Using School Coloring Pages

School is full of exciting memories, from meeting new friends to learning something new every day. That’s why school coloring pages are more than simple coloring activities. They can also become fun crafts that keep children learning while they play.

If you’ve downloaded our free printable school coloring pages PDF below, you’re ready to get started. Simply print your favorite school coloring sheets and turn them into creative projects using supplies you probably already have at home.

As a former private school teacher, I’ve always believed that the best learning happens when children are having fun. In fact, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) also explains that learning through play helps children build important social, creative, and thinking skills. Now, I enjoy creating these activities with Lisa and Mike. A few weeks ago, Emily suggested a family craft afternoon before school started again. By the end of the day, our table was covered with colorful school projects, and Mike was already asking which one we could make next.

In this guide, I’ll share seven easy crafts that encourage creativity, imagination, and hands-on learning. They’re perfect for rainy afternoons, weekends, classroom activities, or getting kids excited about a new school year.

1. School Classroom Door Hanger

Make a Personalized Door Sign for Homework Time

This is one of the first school crafts we make every year. Kids love having something they created hanging on their bedroom door, and it helps make homework time feel a little more special.

Materials Needed:
  • School coloring pages
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Cardstock or thick paper
  • Glue stick
  • Hole punch
  • Ribbon or string
  • Markers or crayons
  • Optional: alphabet stickers

Steps:

  1. Print one of your favorite school coloring pages. Pictures with books, pencils, school buses, or classrooms work especially well.
  2. Let your child color the paper with whichever colors they like. Mike likes to put green on just about everything, and Lisa likes to blend pink and purple to make vivid decorations.
  3. Glue the main cut-out image onto a piece of cardboard to make it sturdy.
  4. Cut out a little circle at the top so it may hang on a door knob. A younger child may need help from an adult with this step.
  5. Write a fun message like “Homework Hero,” “Reading Time,” or “Future Scientist,” or let your child invent their own title.
  6. Punch a hole near the top if you’d rather hang it with a ribbon instead of placing it over the handle.
  7. Hang the finished project on the bedroom or study room door and celebrate your child’s new creation.

One afternoon, Mike invited his cousin over and immediately showed him his “Future Explorer” sign before showing any of his toys. Seeing him feel so proud reminded me that simple crafts can build confidence in surprising ways.

Parent’s Corner: Let your kid write the words instead of you writing them. It gives children a sense of ownership of the project and promotes early reading and spelling in a fun and natural way.

Creative Challenge: Every new school term, make another door hanger with a different goal. One might say “Kindness Counts,” another “Reading Adventure,” or even “I Can Do Hard Things.” After a few years, you’ll have a wonderful collection that shows how your child has grown.

2. School Desk Organizer Box

Build a Handy Organizer for School Supplies

Kids always seem to have pencils, erasers, and rulers scattered everywhere. This craft turns a simple box into a colorful desk organizer using school coloring pages, making clean-up much more exciting.

Mike couldn’t wait to fill his organizer with crayons, while Lisa made separate spaces for her colored pencils and markers.

Materials Needed:

  • School coloring pages
  • Small cereal box or cardboard box
  • Glue stick
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Colored paper
  • Tape
  • Markers or crayons

Steps:

  1. Print your favorite school coloring pages. Pictures with books, pencils, apples, or backpacks look great for this project.
  2. Let your child color the page before cutting out the parts they like best.
  3. Trim the cereal box to the height you want. Adults should help with thicker cardboard.
  4. Cover the outside of the box with the finished coloring page using glue.
  5. Add strips of colored paper around the edges for a neat finish.
  6. If you’d like, place small cardboard dividers inside to separate pencils, scissors, and crayons.
  7. Place the organizer on your child’s desk so school supplies are always easy to find.

A few days after making his organizer, Mike proudly told me he hadn’t lost a single pencil. That’s a small victory every parent can appreciate. Simple activities like cutting and gluing also strengthen hand coordination. The Cleveland Clinic’s guide to fine motor skills explains why these everyday movements are so valuable for young children.

Helpful Idea: Label each compartment with a short label such as “Crayons,” “Pencils,” or “Markers.” It’s a great method for young kids to develop their reading and keep their desks organized.

3. School Goal Ladder Poster

Celebrate Every Small Learning Success

This is one of my favorite projects because it encourages kids instead of competing with others. Each step on the ladder represents something they want to learn or improve during the school year.

When we made ours earlier this month, Mike wanted to “read a whole book by myself,” while Lisa hoped to become more confident speaking in front of her class.

Materials Needed:
  • School coloring pages
  • Large sheet of poster paper
  • Glue
  • Markers
  • Colored paper
  • Stickers (optional)
  • Star stamps or small reward stickers

Steps:

  1. Print and color one or two school coloring pages with classroom or learning themes.
  2. Glue the finished artwork near the bottom of the poster to create a colorful background.
  3. Draw a large ladder climbing toward a bright sun, rainbow, or smiling star.
  4. Write one small goal on each ladder step. Keep them simple so children can reach them with confidence.
  5. When you reach a goal, add a sticker, draw a smiling face, or color that ladder step.
  6. Hang the poster somewhere your child sees every day, such as his or her study area.
  7. When the ladder is complete, celebrate together and perform a family activity instead of buying a toy.

Mike earned his final sticker after remembering to pack his school bag all week. We celebrated with homemade popcorn and a family movie night, which meant much more to him than a prize from the store.

Parent’s Corner: Focus on effort, not perfect results. Praise modest gains to keep children engaged and educate them that learning takes one step at a time.

Creative Challenge: Leave the last step of the ladder blank for your child. Let him pick what the last objective will be. I appreciate hearing the concepts that Lisa and Mike come up with because they often surprise me with dreams that I didn’t expect.

4. School Time Capsule Envelope

Save School Coloring Pages as Special Childhood Memories

This craft is always a surprise because kids don’t get to open it right away. Instead, they create something today that they’ll enjoy looking back on months later. It’s amazing how much they grow in such a short time.

Earlier this year, Lisa smiled at a drawing she made the previous semester. Mike couldn’t believe how much better he had become at coloring inside the lines.

Materials Needed:

  • School coloring pages
  • Large envelope or folder
  • Crayons or markers
  • Glue
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Pencil
  • Stickers or labels

Steps:

  1. Print your favorite school coloring pages and let your child color them however they like.
  2. Cut out one or two favorite pictures and glue them onto the front of a large envelope.
  3. Ask your child to write today’s date and their age on the envelope. Younger children can ask an adult for help.
  4. Slip the finished coloring pages inside along with a quick note or a little sketch of their fondest school memory.
  5. Seal the envelope and choose a future date to open it, such as the last day of school or the beginning of next year.
  6. Keep the envelope in a safe place until it’s time for the big reveal.

When we opened one of Lisa’s older envelopes, she laughed because she had written that her favorite subject was art “forever.” It still is!

Fun Twist: Invite grandparents to write a short encouraging note before sealing the envelope. It’s a simple surprise that children love discovering later.

5. School Coloring Pages Learning Wheel

Spin Your Way Through Fun School Challenges

This craft turns school coloring pages into an interactive game. Instead of asking, “What should we do next?” kids simply spin the wheel and follow the challenge it lands on.

Mike calls it his “mission wheel” because every spin feels like a new adventure.

Materials Needed:

  • School coloring pages
  • Thick cardboard
  • Paper fastener (brad)
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Markers
  • Ruler

Steps:

  1. Print and color one or two school coloring pages with books, pencils, or classroom scenes.
  2. Cut out your best images, and stick them onto a large circle of cardboard.
  3. Make equal parts out of the circle.
  4. Write a simple activity inside each section, such as “Read for 10 minutes,” “Practice writing your name,” “Draw your dream classroom,” or “Count to 100.”
  5. Cut a large arrow from cardboard and attach it to the center using a paper fastener so it spins freely.
  6. Give the wheel a spin and complete whichever activity the arrow chooses.

One Saturday morning, Mike landed on “Read a Story” three times in a row. He laughed and said the wheel really wanted him to become a book expert.

Teacher’s Trick: Keep activities short and doable. Small wins are far more effective in building confidence than long tasks that seem overwhelming.

6. School Bus Route Adventure Map

Explore New Places with School Coloring Pages

Some kids really enjoy acting like they are on a school bus. Those who get to choose the next stop really enjoy it. This craft makes coloring pages from school into a big adventure map that gets kids to use their imaginations and tell stories.

A few weeks ago, Mike thought his school bus required a stop at a dinosaur park. Lisa constructed a library café where everyone may read before class. Their thoughts brought the whole map to life.

Materials Needed:

  • School coloring pages
  • Large sheet of poster paper
  • Crayons or markers
  • Glue stick
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Colored paper
  • Toy vehicle (optional)

Steps:

  1. Print and color some school coloring sheets with school buses, classrooms, backpacks, or students.
  2. Cut out the pictures carefully and set them aside.
  3. Draw winding roads across the poster paper.
  4. Glue the school-themed cutouts along the roads and glue them down to make several “stops.”
  5. Add entertaining areas like a playground, library, science lab, music room, or an imaginary ice cream stop.
  6. Let your child move a small toy bus along the roads while making up stories about each stop.

Learning Bonus: During playtime, ask questions. ‘What occurs at the next station?’ or ‘Who do you meet there?’ These simple conversations help build vocabulary and confidence, yet it doesn’t feel like a lesson.

Extra Fun: Make a new stop every month. Before long, your child will have a giant school town filled with places they’ve imagined themselves.

7. School Achievement Medal Display

Celebrate Every Success with School Coloring Pages

Children don’t always remember the highest test score, but they never forget being encouraged. This craft lets kids celebrate everyday achievements, whether they learned a new word, packed their backpack alone, or helped a classmate.

Mike earned his first “Helping Hands Medal” after cleaning up his art supplies without anyone asking. He wore it around the house for the rest of the evening.

Materials Needed:

  • School coloring pages
  • Cardboard
  • Glue
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Ribbon or yarn
  • Markers
  • Hole punch
  • Gold or silver paper (optional)

Steps:

  1. Print your favorite school coloring pages and color the parts you like most.
  2. Cut circles or badge forms from cardboard.
  3. Glue the colored pictures onto the medals.
  4. Create a positive term for each, like “Reading Star,” “Kind Friend,” “Creative Thinker,” or “Great Listener.”
  5. Punch a hole at the top and thread a ribbon through it.
  6. When your child does something nice or meets a small goal, give them the medal.
  7. Save every medal in a special box so your child can look back at all their achievements.

Lisa still keeps the first medal she ever made. Every now and then she opens the box, smiles, and remembers why she earned each one. Those little moments mean much more than buying another toy.

Family Idea: Let brothers, sisters, and parents create medals for one another too. Emily once surprised me with a “Best Family Helper” medal after we spent the afternoon organizing the craft room. I still have it tucked inside my desk, and it always makes me smile.

Final Thoughts

I hope these school coloring sheets motivate your family to create, learn, and have fun together. Download your favorite pages from the free PDFs above and have fun with these simple crafts at home or in the classroom. Each activity builds creativity, confidence, and fine motor skills in children and creates lasting family memories to last for years to come.
