Greetings! James, proud dad of two creative kids named Mike and Lisa. As a former private school teacher who now works in the GreenColoring community, I enjoy sharing fun and educational activities that help kids grow. Horse coloring pages are one of the best ways to improve your fine motor skills and spark your creativity. Kids in our family have always loved coloring.
Last week, Lisa and Mike sat down with their crayons and printed out the 10 free horse coloring pages in PDF (which you can find right below!). Lisa carefully picked pastel pinks to create a magical fairytale horse, while Mike, of course, went for bold green stripes because why not?
Why Coloring Horses is Awesome for Kids
It’s not just fun to color horses. Many good things happen behind the scenes for kids, such as:
- Increasing creativity: Kids can make their own horse, whether it’s a wild stallion or a rainbow unicorn.
- Focus and patience: Kids can focus better when they stay inside the lines, which takes practice.
- Building Hand Muscles: Holding crayons and pencils helps build the fine motor skills you need to write.
- Encouraging Storytelling: Lisa often makes up stories about the horses she colors, like how they are princesses riding through a magical forest.
Safety Tips for Coloring Fun
I always make sure it’s fun and safe for us to color. Here are some wise safety guidelines:
- Use Materials That Are Safe for Kids: Pick crayons and markers that are safe for kids, especially younger ones like Mike, who sometimes thinks crayons are snacks.
- Always use child-safe scissors or help your child when cutting out shapes.
- Create a Comfortable Space: A table that is clear of clutter and well-lit helps kids color without getting distracted or hurt.
- As needed, keep an eye on them. For example, while Lisa colors on her own, I watch Mike to make sure he doesn’t color the walls.
Smart Tip: Make It a Family Activity!
Coloring doesn’t have to be done alone. Emily and I also participated in the “Horse Coloring Challenge” that was held last month. We enjoyed contrasting our vibrant creations after deciding on a theme, such as fantasy ponies, wild horses, or farm scenes. Try it out with your family for a creative and humorous time spent together!

8 Crafts for Kids Using Horse Coloring Pages
Horse coloring pages are a fantastic way to spark creativity in children. And guess what? I have already published 10 free printable horse coloring pages in PDF above this article, so be sure to grab them before you start crafting! Last weekend, my daughter Lisa and I had so much fun making creative projects with these pages. My son Mike joined in too, though he was more interested in galloping around pretending to be a horse! Let’s dive into some amazing craft ideas you can try with your kids.
1. Horse-Themed Greeting Cards
Materials Needed:
- Colored horse coloring pages
- Blank greeting cards or cardstock paper
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Markers or stickers
- Decorative elements (glitter, ribbons, etc.)
Steps:
- Let your child first choose a favorite horse design from the coloring pages and masterfully color it. While Mike likes adding green to his horses, Lisa always loves using pink.
- Once the coloring is done, carefully cut out the horse shapes. If your child is young, assist them with the scissors for safety.
- Fold a blank cardstock paper in half to create a greeting card.
- Put the colored horse cutout on the front of the card with a glue stick. Press it down gently for a few seconds to make sure it sticks well.
- Attach the colored horse cutout to the front of the card using a glue stick. Press softly for a few seconds to make sure it stays firm.
- Let your child cover the card any way they choose. Lisa enjoys adding stickers and glitter, while Mike likes to sketch hearts and stars all around his work.
- Help your child pen a lovely note inside the card. Let them dictate while you write for them if they are too young to be authors. For more creative card-making ideas, visit Pinterest.com.
- If you used glue or glitter once finished, let the card dry.
Attach a little folded paper behind the horse cutout so it pops out when the card is opened to increase its interactivity!
2. DIY Horse Bookmarks
Materials Needed:
- Colored horse coloring pages
- Scissors
- Hole puncher
- Ribbon or yarn
- Laminating sheets (optional)
Steps:
- Choose a horse design, then color it in. Mike loves strong colors; Lisa prefers soft looks using light pastel tones.
- Cut a long rectangular strip from the page that includes part of the horse drawing.
- If you want a special shape, cut around the horse’s head instead of a straight rectangle.
- Punch a hole at the top center of the bookmark and thread a ribbon or yarn through it.
- Laminate the bookmark for added longevity if you have laminating sheets.
- Let your child personalize their bookmark with stickers, their name, or little drawings.
Smart Tip: Create several bookmarks for several books if your child, like Lisa, loves books!
3. Horse Puzzle Craft
Materials Needed:
- Printable horse coloring pages
- Cardboard
- Glue
- Scissors
Steps:
- Give your kid some creative freedom by letting them choose their own colors to color in a horse coloring page. Lisa is more partial to pastels, while Mike is more into brighter, more striking colors.
- Once the horse shape is colored, carefully cut it out and glue it to a strong piece of cardboard. Firmly press it down to get rid of the air bubbles.
- Wet it all the way through and wait at least an hour before moving on. So, when you cut, the paper won’t come off.
- Use a pencil to lightly draw simple puzzle pieces over the cardboard. Keep the pieces large so that younger kids, like Mike, can easily put them back together.
- Carefully cut along the puzzle lines. If your child is old enough, let them try cutting a few pieces under supervision. Lisa helped Mike with the tricky edges, turning it into a teamwork activity!
- Sort the puzzle pieces and challenge your youngster to refit them. Racing against Lisa to find out who could finish first, Mike had great fun. He even included a timer for additional thrill!
Fun Tip: To keep the puzzle pieces safe, toss them in a little bag or box. From many horse designs, you can create several puzzles and swap them for a great challenge!
4. Hanging Horse Mobile
Materials Needed:
- Horse coloring pages
- Colored horse cutouts
- String or yarn
- Wooden dowel or embroidery hoop
- Hole puncher
Steps:
- Have your young child color several horses from the pages. Urge them to design a vibrant mobile using several tones. While Mike fashioned his green like his preferred Paw Patrol character, Lisa loved painting her horses pink.
- Cut each horse precisely, then create a tiny hole at the top of every cutout using a hole puncher.
- Tie one of the variously length cut strings to every horse. As the mobile moves, this produces a dynamic, floating effect.
- Fasten the other end of every string to an embroidered hoop or a wooden dowel. See to it they are spaced equally.
- Once every horse is fastened, choose a suitable location to hang the mobile, perhaps close to a window where a breeze could cause them to dance.
- Each horse should be raised to produce a balanced appearance. Until they looked “just right,” Lisa and Mike kept shifting theirs about.
Safety Tip: To guarantee the strings do not come free, double knot them. Always hang it somewhere younger siblings or pets cannot reach.
5. Horse Puppets for Storytelling
Materials Needed:
- Colored horse coloring pages
- Popsicle sticks
- Glue
- Googly eyes (optional)
Steps:
- Have your child select a horse coloring page and color it imaginatively and creatively. While Mike enjoys having his horses look like superheroes, Lisa likes adding small heart patterns to hers.
- Cut out the horse form with great accuracy. If your child finds great difficulty with fine cutting, help them with challenging areas like the legs.
- For a strong hold, glue the horse down on a popsicle stick. Before use, let it totally dry.
- Attach googly eyes to move the puppet if you are using them. Mike laughed at this extra step since his horse appeared “surprised all the time!”
- Tell a whimsical horse tale using the puppet. Lisa and Mike created a narrative last week about a flying horse called Star that guided missing animals home. For hours it kept them occupied!
Fun Tip: Make several puppets with various horse designs and names and personalities and assign them. This makes the narrative even more fascinating!
6. Horse Wall Art
Materials Needed:
- Colored horse coloring pages
- Picture frame
- Decorative tape or glitter
Steps:
- Allow your youngster to choose a horse coloring page and inspire them to be as imaginative as they can be. Mike went for a fiery stallion with red and orange streaks; Lisa once turned hers into a fairy horse with wings and glitter.
- After coloring is done, carefully cut it to fit within a picture frame. Use a ruler to guide straight cuts should the edges require cutting back.
- Carefully place the artwork inside the frame. Seeing their work presented so professionally makes my children feel like actual artists every time!
- Decorating the frame will help to make it especially memorable. For a magical effect, use glitter; for personalizing it, use stickers. Mike insists on adding dinosaur stickers while Lisa loves gold glitter; he says, “Dinosaurs and horses were probably friends.”
- Decide where best to show the masterpiece. Excellent choices are bedrooms, play areas, and even a family art wall. For more inspiration on DIY wall art and kids’ crafts, check out Crayola’s Craft Ideas.
Pro Tip: Plan this as a seasonal project. In summer, color brilliant, sunny horses; in winter, include scarves and snowflakes. Changing the theme maintains its freshness and enjoyment.
7. Horse-Themed Party Decorations
Materials Needed:
- Horse coloring pages
- Colored horse cutouts
- String
- Tape
Steps:
- Print and color several horse designs to provide an interesting range. Promote many color schemes to accentuate the decorations. Mike likes strong and vivid colors; Lisa loves pastels.
- Cut each horse very precisely to guarantee seamless edges. Remind your child to slow down if they are cutting to prevent accidental sharp cuts.
- Arrange a length of string and choose the horse order. Let your children lead; it helps them to become more engaged. While Mike just loves haphazardly placing things anywhere, Lisa is quite good at balancing things!
- Attach every horse to the string using small bits of tape. For a neat look, make sure their distances are equal.
- Hang the completed garland above the party table, across doors, or on walls. It gives every celebration an interesting, handcrafted element right away.
Fun Tip: We included small cowboy hats and ribbons on every horse cutout for Mike’s last birthday. The children at the party delighted in pointing out their favorites!
8. DIY Horse Stickers
Materials Needed:
- Horse coloring pages
- Colored horse cutouts
- Sticker paper or clear tape
- Scissors
Steps:
- Select several horse designs and vibrantly color them. While Mike often adds action lines to make his horses seem to be running extremely fast, Lisa likes making hers sparkle with metallic gel pens.
- Cut out the horses carefully once the coloring is finished. Sometimes I outline them in marker before cutting to simplify things. This keeps younger children like Mike on target with their scissors.
- Peel and stick the horse cutouts onto sticker paper if you have that. If not, laminate every horse using clear tape, then trim around the edges once more to produce a robust, handcrafted sticker.
- Once the stickers are ready, let your child embellish notebooks, water bottles, and even friend greeting cards with them. Lisa created a card for her best friend showing a pink horse with glittering hooves, and her friend really loved it!
- To keep additional stickers neat and ready for use, store them in a small envelope or a resealable bag.
Smart Tip: To create a great backpack charm, punch a hole in the top of a sticker and loop it through a keychain ring.
Using horse coloring pages is a great approach to combine hands-on enjoyment with imagination.
