My son Mike and I had a pleasant afternoon coloring deer last week. Though he particularly loves lions, he became interested when I showed him a deer coloring page. “Do they run as fast as Sonic?” he asked. That resulted in an interesting conversation about wild deer, and before I knew it, he was meticulously coloring every component, adding tiny specks like a baby fawn. Coloring serves purposes beyond mere entertainment. It helps children grow creatively, patiently, and with hand-eye coordination. I thus enjoy sharing free printable deer coloring pages in PDF format right below so you may enjoy them too!
Why should you color deer?
It’s fun to color deer because they are gentle and graceful. As kids play with different shades of brown, orange, and even winter-themed white, they can learn about nature. Color also helps kids:
- Sharpen Your Focus: To stay inside the lines, you have to focus.
- Make your motor skills stronger: Using a pencil requires small hand movements.
- Get Children Thinking: A deer in a forest covered in snow? A female deer with rainbow colors? Let your imagination shine!
Smart Coloring Tips and Hacks
To make coloring even more fun and engaging, try these smart tips:
- How to Mix Colors: To make realistic fur effects, show your kids how to mix colors by putting light and dark shades on top of each other.
- Texture Trick: Use a crumpled piece of paper under the coloring page to give the deer’s fur a unique texture that makes it look real!
- Glowing Outline: Lisa likes to use a light yellow or white pencil to make the edges of her drawings stand out.
- Storytelling Fun: Have your kids write a short story about their deer when they’re done coloring. I thought Mike’s story about a superhero deer who saves the forest was funny.

8 Crafts for Kids Using Deer Coloring Pages
If you’re looking for fun and creative ways to use deer coloring pages, you’re in the right place! As a father of two, I’m always thinking of new activities to keep my kids engaged. Last week, Lisa and Mike had a blast turning their colored deer pages into amazing crafts. Best of all, I’ve already published 10 free deer coloring pages in PDF format above this article; just print them out, and let’s get started!
1. Deer Paper Puppet
Materials Needed:
- Printed and colored deer coloring pages
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
- Popsicle stick or drinking straw
- Googly eyes (optional)
Steps:
- Let your children first carefully cut out the deer they colored. Help younger children with the challenging edges.
- Using glue or tape, fasten a drinking straw or popsicle stick to the rear of the deer cutout. Because he gets bored waiting for the glue to set, Mike enjoys using tape.
- Stick on some googly eyes or draw a little smile to give your puppet some personality.
- Let the puppet show start once everything has dried. For Emily and me, Lisa and Mike constantly set up funny puppet shows that create exciting forest deer adventures.
Fun Tip: Play your deer puppets in several voices. Lisa’s deer speaks in a gentle, princess-like voice; Mike always makes his deer sound like a superhero. For more fun puppet ideas, visit PBS Kids.
2. Deer-Themed Greeting Card
Materials Needed:
- Deer coloring pages
- Colored paper
- Glue
- Markers or stickers
Steps:
- To make the base of the card, fold a piece of colored paper in half. Pick a color that goes well with the deer’s fur.
- Cut out the deer from the coloring page very carefully, then glue it to the front of the card. Lisa likes to make it stand out by putting a small border around it.
- For a magical look, you can decorate the card with stickers, drawings, or even glitter.
- Let your kid write a special note inside the card. Mike once made one for Emily that said, “Mom, you are as kind as a deer in the woods!” It made her heart melt.
Tip: If your kids want to make their cards stand out even more, have them glue dried leaves or small twigs around the deer for a design that looks like it came from nature. For more creative greeting card ideas, check out Crayola.
3. Deer Mobile Decoration
Materials Needed:
- Deer coloring pages
- Colored deer cutouts
- String or yarn
- Wooden stick or hanger
- Tape or glue
Steps:
- Print and color several deer pages; then, cut them out very precisely. Let your children apply watercolors for a more artistic touch if they enjoy painting. Once making a blue deer, Mike insisted it came from a magical winter world.
- Cut varying lengths of yarn or thread and tape or glue one deer to each end. Lisa likes to braid her strings to accentuate their beauty.
- To produce a balanced design, space out the strings on a wooden stick or hanger. Let a wooden stick from the backyard dry first so it won’t make the paper soggy.
- Hang the mobile either over a bed or close to a window. The mild movement will have a relaxing effect ideal for the evening. Mike enjoys seeing his cell spin slowly as he sleeps.
Smart Tip: For a whole forest scene, sandwich little paper leaves or clouds between the deer. To make it enchanted at night, you can even fasten small glow-in-the-dark stars!
4. Deer Bookmark for Reading Time
Materials Needed:
- Deer coloring pages
- Laminating sheet or tape
- Hole punch
- Ribbon
Steps:
- Select a deer image from the coloring page, then cut a rectangular strip around it to guarantee the deer is prominently shown. Try a rounded or jagged-edge shape if your child prefers something more unusual.
- Laminate it or cover it with clear tape to extend the bookmark. This trick came to Lisa and me after Mike dropped his first bookmark in his juice by accident! Our bookmarks today withstand many kinds of spills. For added durability, we also like to use cardstock paper.
- Making a hole at the bookmark’s top, thread a ribbon through it. Mike likes jungle-themed ribbons; Lisa enjoys using glittering ones. Should your child like beading, they can embellish their work with a few vibrant beads.
- Customize the bookmarks with stickers, glitter, and even a handwritten note. While Mike sketches tiny acorns or paw prints around the margins, Lisa always writes little quotes on hers, such as “Happy Reading!”
Fun Tip: Create a family reading challenge with bookmarks featuring various deer poses serving as prizes.
5. Deer Snow Globe
Materials Needed:
- Small glass or plastic jar
- Deer coloring pages
- White glitter or fake snow
- Water and glycerin (optional)
- Strong glue
Steps:
- Select a small jar with a tightly closing lid. Clear it so you can view your snowy scene. Last time Mike chose a peanut butter jar and insisted on not removing the label, referring to it as a “special effect.”
- Glue a colored deer cutout to the inside of the jar lid. Before advancing to the next stage, let it dry totally.
- Add a few drops of glycerin and nearly fill the jar with water. Snowfall falls more slowly as a result.
- Then firmly screw the lid onto the jar after sprinkling fake snow or white glitter.
- Shakes it and sees the snow softly falling around the deer.
Pro Tip: Add a small LED light within the lid to produce a magical effect. It gives the snow globe a nighttime glow.
6. Wall Art with a Deer Silhouette
Materials Needed:
- Deer coloring pages
- Canvas or thick paper
- Paint or markers
- Scissors and glue
Steps:
- From the coloring page, cut out a deer form. This will act as either your raised 3D design or your silhouette.
- Arrange the cutout on a blank canvas, then decide on a backdrop color. Mike painted his in deep forest green; Lisa chose a pink sunset.
- If you wish for a silhouette effect, paint all around the deer cutout; then, take it off to expose the form. Instead, if you wish for a raised effect, glue the colored deer onto the canvas.
- Add additional decorations, including trees, stars, or even glow-in-the-dark paint. Lisa once surrounded her deer with small silver stars, and it looked like a dreamy night sky!
Fun Tip: Apply several paint tones using a sponge to create some texture. It produces a lovely layered effect.
7. Deer-Themed Memory Game
Materials Needed:
- Multiple copies of deer coloring pages
- Cardstock paper
- Scissors
- Laminating sheets (optional)
Steps:
- Print two duplicates of every deer picture and color them in. Allow your children to create distinctive and fun pairs using several colors.
- To make the pictures sturdier, cut them into squares, then glue them onto cardstock. While Mike just wants to cut them fast to begin playing, Lisa enjoys designing elegant borders.
- Laminated the cards or covered them with clear tape if you want the game to last. We started working on this after Mike’s backpack crumpled our first homemade memory game.
- Sort the cards and then lay them face down. Flip two at a time in turns, looking for a match. The one who pairs the most wins!
Fun Tip: Make some images almost exact but with minute variations to create varying degrees of challenge. It keeps children always on alert!
8. Deer Party Masks
Materials Needed:
- Deer coloring pages
- Elastic string
- Hole punch
- Scissors
Steps:
- From the coloring page, choose a deer face and carefully cut it out, being sure to include eye holes so children may see through the mask. Lisa once put extra eyelashes on hers to enhance their look!
- To mimic fur, color, and embellish the deer mask with markers, glitter, or even tiny felt bits.
- Punch holes on both sides of the mask, then thread the elastic string through. Change it so your child may comfortably fit on their head.
- Let the pleasure start! Lisa and Mike enjoy acting out stories where the deer embarks on a magical adventure in the forest using their masks—last time!
If your child enjoys role-playing, create masks for the entire family and stage a fun deer-themed performance.
These eight deer crafts are fantastic ways to bring creativity and fun into your home. Whether it’s a rainy day or a weekend activity, using deer coloring pages in crafts keeps kids entertained while improving their motor skills.
